North Texas remains strong with 24 Fortune 500 companies headquartered in region

April 15th, 2010

The North Texas Commission and FORTUNE magazine congratulate the 24 North Texas-based companies listed in the 2010 FORTUNE 500 listing. The FORTUNE 500 list was released on April 15 on FORTUNE magazine’s Web site, www.fortune.com, and will be available on newsstands April 19. In July of 1955, FORTUNE magazine produced its first directory of biggest companies representing all industrial sectors, which became known as the FORTUNE 500.

The 24 North Texas-based companies help Texas tie with California as the state with the most FORTUNE 500 companies at 57 each. The 2010 list, in ranking order, for North Texas: Exxon Mobil (2), AT&T (7), Fluor (111), AMR (120), Kimberly-Clark (126), J.C. Penney (133), BNSF Railway Company (167), Dean Foods (208), Texas Instruments (223), Southwest Airlines (229), Energy Future Holdings (246), Tenet Healthcare (253), Game Stop (255), XTO Energy (258), Commercial Metals (327), Affiliated Computer Services (341), Dr. Pepper Snapple Group (378), Energy Transfer Equity (388), Celanese (414), Atmos Energy (424), Holly (431), Flowserve (473), RadioShack (481) and Blockbuster (500).

“The FORTUNE 500 list is synonymous with business in America”, said Andy Serwer, Managing Editor, FORTUNE. “The FORTUNE 500 issue is so comprehensive; it is used as an encyclopedia for anyone interested in large corporations. The FORTUNE 500 online channel analyzes, dissects, cross-references, and compiles data for a complete user experience that really solidifies the fact that FORTUNE means business.”

In addition to being home to two FORTUNE top 10 companies, Exxon Mobil (2) and AT&T (7), two North Texas companies appear on the list since the 2009 list: Flowserve, up 40 spots to 473, and RadioShack, up 34 spots to 481. For the third year straight, Texas leads the nation with the most FORTUNE 500 companies; tied with California with 57 FORTUNE 500 companies.

“As one of the fastest growing regions in the country we are thrilled to see that our businesses continued to be recognized by FORTUNE magazine,” said Dan S. Petty, president and CEO of the North Texas Commission. “We are proud to have 24 FORTUNE 500 companies call North Texas home as well as the many other companies that contribute to our vitality.”
