North Texas’ Exxon Mobil tops annual ranking
IRVING – The North Texas Commission and Fortune magazine recognize the 25 North Texas companies ranked in the 2009 Fortune 500 listing released April 19.
Exxon Mobil, headquartered in Irving, surpassed Wal-Mart Stores as No. 1 on the 2009 Fortune 500 list, which ranks companies by total revenue for their respective fiscal years. In June 2008, AT&T announced its relocation to North Texas, providing an additional Fortune 500 top 10 company to the region.

North Texas topped last year’s total of 23 companies with 25 in 2009, while Texas increased its share from 58 companies in 2008 to 64 in 2009. North Texas had three new additions this year – Dr Pepper Snapple Group and Crosstex Energy, along with AT&T – while losing just one company from 2008.
The 25 headquarters in North Texas help position Texas as the top state in the rankings with eight more Fortune 500 companies than New York, which had the second most at 56.
“With a nearly 40 year history, the North Texas Commission has seen exciting growth for our region and that’s evidenced by the company we keep,” said Dan S. Petty, president and CEO of the North Texas Commission. “We are proud to have 25 Fortune 500 companies call North Texas home as well as the many other companies that contribute to our vitality.”
The Fortune 500 list was released April 19 on Fortune magazine’s Web site, www.fortune.com, and will be available on newsstands on April 27. In July of 1955, Fortune magazine produced its first directory of biggest companies representing all industrial sectors, which became known as the Fortune 500.
