Revenue for North Texas Fortune 500 Swells to $702.6 billion

The number of North Texas-based companies on the 2018 Fortune 500 list has grown from 18 to 22 in the last five years, according to an analysis by the North Texas Commission. Irving’s Exxon Mobil was the highest ranked North Texas company at No. 2. Returning to the top 500 is Irving’s Pioneer Natural Resources at No. 497. The Fortune 500 list was released on Fortune magazine’s Web site, www.fortune.com.

According to Fortune, the 22 North Texas companies collectively generated more than $702 billion in revenue, which is an increase of more than $59 billion from last year. The North Texas Commission compiled data from the Fortune 500 list to determine and report metropolitan rankings by the number of headquarters and revenues in the region.

The 2018 Fortune 500 list recognizes the following 22 North Texas companies, in ranking order: Exxon Mobil (2); AT&T (9); Energy Transfer Equity (64); American Airlines (71); Southwest Airlines (142); Tenet Healthcare (147);  Fluor (153); Kimberly-Clark (163); Texas Instruments (192); HollyFrontier (206); D.R. Horton (211); J.C. Penney (235); Jacobs Engineering Group (297); GameStop (322); Dean Foods (362); Alliance Data Systems (365); Yum China Holdings (397); Builders FirstSource (400); Dr Pepper Snapple Group (418); Celanese (455); Pioneer Natural Resources (397); and Vistra Energy (499).

Ten DFW Fortune 500 companies increased in rank from 2017 to 2018: Exxon Mobil – a two-spot jump; Energy Transfer Equity – 15 spot jump; Texas Instruments – 14 spot jump; HollyFrontier – 68 spot jump; D.R. Horton – 21 spot jump; Alliance Data Systems – 13 spot jump; Yum China Holdings – two-spot jump; Builders FirstSource – 21 spot jump; Celanese – 29 spot jump; and Pioneer Natural Resources – 109 spot jump.

In addition, six DFW Fortune 500 companies were recognized for growth in jobs in this year: American Airlines Group, Southwest Airlines, Alliance Data Systems, Yum China Holdings, Builders FirstSource, and Dr. Pepper Snapple Group.

In July of 1955, Fortune magazine produced its first directory of biggest companies representing all industrial sectors, which became known as the Fortune 500. Nine DFW Fortune 500 companies have been on the list for more than 20 years: Exxon Mobil – 24 years; AT&T – 24 years; American Airlines Group – 24 years; Southwest Airlines – 24 years; Tenet Healthcare – 24 years; Kimberly Clark – 24 years; Texas Instruments – 24 years; J.C. Penney – 24 years; and Dean Foods – 20 years.
