Meet our Members: Mayor Doug Athas

Mayor Douglas Athas, City of Garland

Douglas Athas was elected Mayor of Garland in May 2013 and is serving his first term. He previously served three terms as a Council Member representing District 1 from 2006-2012. During his term on the City Council, he served as Mayor Pro Tem and as the Council’s representative to the Dallas Regional Mobility Council. Prior to serving on the City Council, Mayor Athas served on the Garland Plan Commission for eight years. Mayor Athas has lived in Garland since 1992. As a tenured resident, Mayor Athas has served the Garland community in many capacities.

Mayor Athas has been heavily involved in various organizations both locally and nationally. He served on the boards of: the First Tier Suburbs Council for the National League of Cities, the Garland Economic Development Partnership Steering Committee, the International Council of Shopping Centers, Texas Neighborhoods Together, Garland Homeowners Coalition, The Greens Homeowners Association, Congress for the New Urbanism and the Duck Creek District (formerly Gray Owl) for the Boy Scouts.

Aside from his roles in the community, Mayor Athas is an avid photographer and created the Garland Eyes website. He also enjoys traveling with his wife Robyn, and son, Shae. The family likes to spend time reading, enjoying movies and exploring.
